Buick Motor Company was founded by David Dunbar Buick (1854-1929)–a Scottish boy who came to America with his parents when he was 2 years old. David quit school and worked for a plumbing company. He was something of an inventor–you can thank him for your lawn sprinklers and the white porcelain coating on your metal bath tub. David next turned his curiosity to internal combustion engines. That lead to making a car to put that engine in. The Buick brand took off, but sadly, Mr. Buick was bought out of his company for an embarrassing low cost and continued on to a variety of doomed ventures. He died of colon cancer & broke, at age 74.
